Blessing

 

We often think about being blessed in our limited scope to refer only to an increase in material gain. Whilst this is sometimes a sign that one is indeed blessed, this is only a fragment of what the word means; this word is much bigger than that and carries greater weight. To be blessed is to have God's favour upon your life- which transcends to every aspect of your life and everything that concerns your being. To be blessed simply means submitting your life to God's leading- do what he requires of you, live the way he commands and have genuine love in your heart for others (neighbour).

 

Types of blessings that we need

- Spiritual blessings: We need to ensure that God has indeed selected us and set us apart for his grand plan; access to his grace and mercies for our daily walk with him. Eph. 1:3-4 (NIV) says “praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love.”

- Physical blessings: We need God's strength so that we can fulfil the purpose for which we were created. We need good health so that we can  stay alive to enjoy the company of family and friends and worship the God who created us. How many of us know that being in good health is a blessing? Do not take it for granted! 3 John 3: 1-2 (KJV) echoed "beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

-Social blessing: It is a blessing to be surrounded by good company. We need honest people, those who deposit nothing short of true love, knowledge and care for our lives. We also need people who are wise to be in our circles who can give us good advice and wise counsel. Prov. 13:10 says "He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.”

- Emotional blessing: We need to have peace of mind, freedom from internal battles and true joy. This is not easily attainable. It is only attainable by living a life devoted to Christ. Neh. 8:10 (NIV) Says "the joy of the Lord is our strength."

- Financial blessing: We need to have enough money (assets) to satisfy our wants and especially needs. Prov.3:9-10 says, "honour the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine." The principle is, if you give to the cause of Christ, then you will receive this blessing-Tithing, giving to charity, assisting out of love when you see the need of others; giving food to the hungry. This is how true financial blessing is obtained.

 

Exposing the lie!

Increase in material possession is not always an indicator that one is blessed. It may be an indication to us that such an individual is engaged in illegal activities, have become overtaken by greed or has become a worshipper of money. The way one utilises money and the motive behind its use is the real indicator of how blessed one is-financially. The perfect indicator of blessed individuals and how they operate include and is not limited to the following:

-Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly

-Blessed are the peacemakers

-Blessed are the pure in heart

-Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord

 

A blessing can be a noun-favour; it can be a verb-your action, and it can be an adjective, a word to describe you.
